A Free Style Waterfall Cluster - Huangguoshu, Guizhou

Doupotan (陡波塘) is one of the attractions among the six great scenic spots in Huangguoshu Waterfalls National Park. It situates 1km away from the upstream of Baishui-he River (白水河), short walking distance from the entrance gate. Measured at about 105 meters in width with height of 21 meters, it is considered as the widest waterfall cluster at site. Doupotan is neither grand or great, but massive amount of water overthrown from the huge eroded pit at its top, into a flat and broad calcified shoal that composed of ten numbers of irregular sized green pools at the base, is rather peculiar.

Doupotan sometimes is also known as Houpu (吼瀑), a Howling Fall, as during the flooding season, its "holonglong" roaring sound is as if some started vehicle engines.

Doupotan is not magnificent but quite famous partly because it was the shooting place of Chinese show, The West Journey. The scene of Master Xuan-Zhang and his three animal disciples on the way traveling to the west for Buddhist scriptures was filmed here.

During ordinary period, water at the shoal appears crystal clear and clean but during flooding season, it would look muddy as the force of massive water when pouring down from the upstream, also swept down mud and sand.

Falls of Duopotan in this dry season of December is not too massive or heavy but water are clear and sparkling.

Some of the small green pools at the base of the calcified shoal.

The waterfall when coming to lower stream becomes calm and graceful.

Sculptures of Master Xuan-Zhang and his disciples crossing over the river was placed along the river bank.

Too many man-made sculptures spoiled the charm of the nature.

Water dropping from Doupatan begins to freely squeezing its way downwards heading to the direction of Grand Fall.
