The million years ice cave, surrounded by dense forests, is located 50km away from Ningwu County in the east of Maodigou Village at Censhan Town. The nature wonder was believed to be formed in the 4th icing age era, 3 million years ago. Out of the nine ice caves found in China, this is the largest and its very rare through out the world. The infinitive volume of the ice stored in the cave is believed to be caused by its incredibly strong natural freezing system. The uniqueness is that the ice never melt, the deeper it goes the thicker it is, in regardless of the weather outside the cave. In fact, it is impossible for a site which has the extreme 4 seasons climate, to create condition for a site to maintain like the area in arctic or antarctic ocean. And more miracle is that an unceasingly flaming 1000 years volcano was found on the same hill top 200km away from the cave.
Nobody knows when was this ice cave first discovered. People only knows that in the past, villagers used to come here to take ice when in shortage of water and when they were in fever and need ice to lower the temperature. There was no idea about the depth of the cave, but they knew that the deeper they go, the colder it is and when things dropping into the hole, not a slight sound could be heard.
In view of its potential in tourism, Ningwu Icing Cave began to develop during the 90s. The developed section that stretches downwards for 100 meters, has 5 layers. The ice-drilled hole, iced-stairs and passage ways are separated by rocks and ice formation. Each layer allows only 10 persons as the diameter and space are limited between 10 to 20 meters only.
Since it opens to the public, The mysterious Icing Cave had not only become an attraction for its abundant natural views but also a new research spot to many paleontologist, geologist and expatriates related to the fields, locals and abroad.
