The Magical Soil Formation - Datong

About 25km away from Datong at south east direction, lying on both banks of a river, is an unusual stone slabs valley. The single colored sights is a magical world filling with various shapes and postures, in multiple designs soil formation that changed from day to day. From distance, they are like castles or sculptures but going near, it is a spiritual maze with network of paths and hedges within the water site.

The stone slabs that had been long period being calcified, were an important factor in the process of these unusual formation. When snow begins to melt and weather is getting warmer in Spring, sodium chloride  seeped out from the soil to the earth surface and gradually penetrated into the ground again when it rains. Seasons after seasons, the stone slabs mixed and compressed with these highly salinity soil with pebble thus forming the structure of these geological formation.

The legend says that fairy fox used to appear at the region.

A slump site had converted into a mystery world by nature.

He was going to explore the mystery, could he meet a fairy fox?

Vast land of soil formation stretching from south towards the water site.

They are neither castle nor sculpture but they look like one of them.

Wonder of nature!

Its a nature art!

Compared to granite formation in Huangshan, stone formation in Yunnan, sand formation in Ganshu, Soil formation in Datong is much smaller in size but they are more mysterious.

The only vegetation that garnished the area is kind of grass named by locals as Cat's Tail.

Cat's Tail Grass is one of the rare vegetation that is able to withstand long term drought and high salinity soil.

The grass has jazzed up with the soil into a sophisticated picture.

Over the other side of the river, there is a temple that house a fairy fox as locals believe that there is fairy fox around the site.

Traffic at this region is always paralyzed owing to these farmers' carts loaded with beet roots, a local produce that can be converted into sugar.

Many villagers had shifted to a more convenient quarters from the kiln cavern where their great grand parents lived.

Kiln like Cavern were the home of many villagers here.

Visited a cavern home of an old man. The cavern now is facilitated with electricity which is much convenient for him in daily life.

This is his sleeping room.

This is a memorable site as it was the hiding place of many villagers during the invade of Japanese in the 2nd world war.
